Über die Position:

Wir suchen einen Data Scientist – Meteorologie zur Verstärkung unseres Data Science Teams in Karlsruhe. Diese Position ist eine einzigartige Gelegenheit, an der Schnittstelle zwischen Wetter- und Klimadaten, Energiemärkten und Methoden des maschinellen Lernens (ML) zu arbeiten. Sie werden in einem kleinen Team arbeiten, das sich auf das Management und kontinuierliche Verbesserung einer Reihe von ML-Modellen konzentriert. Ihre meteorologische Expertise bringen Sie gewinnbringend ins Team ein, um wetterabhängige Elemente der Energiemärkte wie Strom- und Gasnachfrage sowie die Stromerzeugung aus erneuerbaren Energien zu prognostizieren. Es wird von Ihnen erwartet, dass Sie in einem schnelllebigen, dynamischen Umfeld kontinuierlich neue Fähigkeiten entwickeln und anwenden.

Hauptaufgaben/Zuständigkeiten:

• Als Teil eines Data Science Teams entwickeln, überwachen, pflegen und verbessern Sie Vorhersagemodelle für den Energiemarkt, die stark von Wetterdaten abhängen (z. B. Stromerzeugung aus Wind und PV)

• Entwicklung und Verbesserung von Prozessen zur Anwendung aktueller Entwicklungen in dem Bereich künstlicher Intelligenz auf Wettervorhersagemodelle (z. B. FourCastNet)

• Zusammenarbeit mit dem Data Engineering Team zur Speicherung und Aufbereitung relevanter (oft großer) Datensätze mit Schwerpunkt auf Wetter- und Energiemärkten

• Ihr durchschnittlicher Arbeitstag wird sowohl die Verbesserung bestehender Prozesse als auch die Arbeit an neuen Ideen umfassen

  Erforderliche Schlüsselqualifikationen/Erfahrungen:

• Hochschulabschluss in Atmosphärenwissenschaften, Meteorologie, Klima-/Erdsystemwissenschaften, Hydrologie oder ähnlichen Bereichen

• Signifikante Erfahrung und Begeisterung für Wetterdaten und prädiktive Modellierung wie ML- oder Zeitreihenmodelle

• Solide Erfahrung mit den Standard-Python-Techniken und gängigen ML-Bibliotheken. (Pandas, NumPy, Scikit-learn, xarray...)

• Erfahrung mit Datenbanken (z. B. SQL)

• Selbstständiges Arbeiten und ausgeprägte Kommunikations- und Kooperationsfähigkeiten

• Flexibilität gepaart mit einer neugierigen und kreativen Denkweise

• Fließend in Englisch (in Wort und Schrift)

• Gute Kommunikationsfähigkeiten in Deutsch

  Bevorzugte Qualifikationen:

• Erfahrung im Umgang mit großen, mehrdimensionalen Daten (z. B. netCDF, GRIB, TIFF-Dateien)

• Kenntnisse grundlegender Softwareentwicklungsprinzipien (Modularisierung, Versionierung, z. B. mit GIT, Tests, verständlicher Code)

• Erfahrung mit der Entwicklung, Wartung und dem Einsatz produktionsreifer ML-Modelle

Job Description:

We’re looking for a Data Scientist - Meteorology to join our Data Science Team in Karlsruhe. This role is a unique opportunity to work at the intersection between weather & climate data, energy markets and machine learning. You will be working in a small team that focusses on maintaining and continuously improving an array of machine learning models that forecast weather dependent elements of energy markets such as power and gas demand and renewable power generation. You’ll be expected to continually develop and apply new skills in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities:

• As part of a Data Science team develop, monitor, maintain and improve predictive models for energy markets elements that strongly depend on weather data (e.g. wind & PV power generation)

• Build and improve processes to apply current developments in AI to weather forecasting models (e.g. FourCastNet)

• Work together with the data engineering team to store and prepare relevant (often large) data sets with a focus on weather and energy markets

• Your average day will include both improving existing processes as well as working on new ideas

Key Skills/Experience Required:

• Graduate degree in atmospheric science, meteorology, climate/earth systems science, hydrology or similar fields

• Significant experience and excitement with weather data and predictive modelling such as machine learning or time series models

• Solid experience with the standard python machine learning techniques and popular ML libraries. (Pandas, NumPy, Scikit-learn, xarray…)

• Experience with databases (SQL)

• Ability to work independently and strong communication and collaboration skills

• Flexibility paired with a curious and creative mindset

• Fluent in English (written and spoken)

• Good communication skills in German

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience in working with large, multi-dimensional data (e.g., netCDF, GRIB, TIFF files)

• Knowledge of basic software development principles (modularisation, versioning e.g. with GIT, tests, understandable code) highly preferred

• experience with development, maintenance and deployment of production-grade machine learning models
